Grey lotus - acacia

Grey Lotus originally started as a studio project by Daan Arisz and Joost Verhagen back in 2008, exploring psychedellic oriented progressive folk sounds. Later on they recruited new bandmembers with whom they recorded their critically aclaimed albums 'The Art of Listening' (2010) and 'Our Little World of Glass' (Blowpipe Records, 2013).

During the course of their career the sound of the band slowly developed toward a more acoustic oriented, improvised jazz influenced experimental style of folk. The band's acoustic set up turned out to be quite popular, with people asking for recorded material of their new acoustic setting. That demand resulted in the live album Acacia.

Grey Lotus is currently working on new material.

q: why this album?

Eric: Somewhere in 2016, Yorick (van Norden) shared a post on Facebook regarding Grey Lotus. I think it was a post with new videos they had shared of their live performance. So naturally I clicked on it and started to listen to them. The first song that I came across was "I Break The Waves". Which is such a hauntingly beautiful song and then that chorus hits you with "And time goes in reverse, from my funeral to my birth. Until I dissolve, into nothing, but chromosomes". I don't know why, but the way that song was delivered, I just instantly loved it.

So I played the rest of the songs, send a message thru Facebook, had a little meeting and it resulted in the live album Acacia. Joost (singer) told me about the fact that they had gotten a lot of requests for recorded acoustic versions of their songs. Since due to planning gigs, not everybody from the band would be able to make it, so they would play in a strip-backed 4 piece band in acoustic setting most of the time.

Since the band already wanted to do a release of an acoustic live session, the plan was made to release the material on vinyl. Originally it was scheduled for release in February, but then the releases of The Hype and Fridolijn came along, so I decided to release it for Record Store Day instead together with The Hype and Fridolijn.
